Gas mk4 10 mins. Empty
PostSubject: Gas mk4 10 mins.   Gas mk4 10 mins. Empty27/9/2012, 1:15 am

I always thought heat killed GPU's , before mine died origionally it was running near 100 degrees with crashes galore- then code 43 on both gpu's- device cannot start.

I had heard of baking but never wanted to try it just incase it was the driver at fault and not the card.

Eventually i didnt have a choice as anything i tried didnt resolve it so it went in the oven reluctantly. There was a nice burning smell so thought it would be broken afterwards. I tried it back in the machine when it had cooled and - it worked-

A few weeks ago it happened again- code 43 both gpu's-grr

So today it went in the oven again- and had the success again.

As i thought heat damaged gpu's surely it would be well and truely fried by now- but no its got another leash of life.

So why does this process work??

I know the heat resets the solder on the card but i thought the gpu board would be plastic based so at 200 degrees in the oven it would melt or at least damage it.

Any thoughts anyone??

Unsure why this works without taking the whole board out tbh. Obviously, these things run so hot that it aint just normal PCB plastic - otherwise most would open the oven to an Nvidia Pizza!

I'm chuffed this solution worked. But if you think about it, surely every time it gets baked, the solder rests at a new lower level than before(?) which logically could mean that the process is just a ticking bomb.

The sad thing is, from a used market POV, you're likely to get someone bake a fekked card, find it works and sell it straight on...

Sad

U just need a heat-seeking vacuum that'll suck the solder from one, so you can "redistribute" it on the other...

cheers
